They Only Built Five: Gender Representation in NYC Public Art

Mission Statement: Ever since high school, I have been intrigued by the lack of female representation in different disciplines. I learned about how women were historically depicted or expected to act in society, and how there has been movements challenging these stereotypes and/or lack of representation. In my personal life, I have grown up alongside strong women who were already rejecting sexism, and therefore, this exposure has inspired me to become aware of these issues and influenced my academic experience.

This resulted in my desire to conduct this project on the lack of female historical statues in public art in New York City, which is where I have lived my whole life and been a large part of my identity. For my project, I discuss my personal experience, as a woman, in viewing these statues and hope to bring further awareness to this severe imbalance.
